Woodston, Huntingdonshire

Woodston is now a residential area of Peterborough in the county of Cambridgehsire. As ever, much of Cambridgeshire as we know it today has been made up from several smaller historical counties and districts. Much of the Peterborough area (the city itself, plus about 30 parishes) was part of the county of Northamptonshire and  known as the Soke of Peterborough. Woodston, however, sitting just south of the River Nene was historically part of the county of Huntingdonshire.

Woodston's parish church is that of St Augustine. It's churchyard and local area was once said to be haunted by a Black Lady. It is said that this lady was once a resident of nearby Belsize Avenue. On her death she vowed to come back and watch over her now orphaned children. Locals seemed to take this to heart and she was subsequently seen haunting the area. Whilst this protective mother should have been a benign spirit, those that saw her became terroised by the experience. Eventually the children were removed elsewhere and this seems to have stopped the sightings. One wonders if they ever saw the ghost of their mother at their new home....
